The pileated woodpecker is the largest woodpecker living in North America. Not only are they big, they are easily recognizable by their bright red crests. Pileated is derived from the word pileus, which refers to a felt cap. They peck for carpenter ants in wood.
Made out of sustainably harvested balsa wood, these lightweight ornaments are hand-carved and then painted with non-toxic acrylic paint by a cooperative of skilled artisans on Isla Solentiname, Nicaragua. Approximate size: 5" x 2".
