Imagine an elephant and a wild hog having a baby. Can you envision what it would look like? It would look just a tapir! The tapir is South America's largest mammal. They can run 30 mph, are great swimmers, are considered a living fossil (have not evolved dramatically for a long time), and are most closely related to horse and rhinos. What makes the Tapir really unique is its prehensile nose. They can wiggle their nose, use it to grab leaves, fruit, and other food, and they can use it as a snorkle when swimming.
Made out of sustainably harvested balsa wood, these lightweight ornaments are hand-carved and then painted with non-toxic acrylic paint by a cooperative of skilled artisans on Isla Solentiname, Nicaragua. Approximate size: 5" x 2".
