The lesser long-nosed bat is one of three nectar-feeding bats. An important desert pollinator, they have a unique relationship with the saguaro cactus. This iconic cactus blooms for just one night to attract the lesser long-nosed bats which use their "long nose" to reach into the saguaro flower blossoms for nectar. Their hairy heads get covered with pollen that they take flower to flower as they fly from cactus to cactus throughout the night. The blossoms close by the following afternoon.
Made out of sustainably harvested balsa wood, these lightweight ornaments are hand-carved and then painted with non-toxic acrylic paint by a cooperative of skilled artisans on Isla Solentiname, Nicaragua. Approximate size: 5" x 2".
