Belted Kingfisher Balsa Ornament

This is a female belted kingfisher. How do we know this? This is one of the only species of birds where the female is more colorful. They primarily eat small fish, but it is the way they eat the fish that is most interesting. After catching the fish, they return to their perch and literally "whack" the fish against the ground or a tree to stun it. This apparently makes eating the fish easier.

Made out of sustainably harvested balsa wood, these lightweight ornaments are hand-carved and then painted with non-toxic acrylic paint by a cooperative of skilled artisans on Isla Solentiname, Nicaragua. Approximate size: 5" x 2".
