Blue Whale Balsa Ornament

The blue whale is the largest animal on Earth despite eating plankton (krill), one of the smallest things in the ocean. When we say big, think 100 ft long and the weight of a car. Referred to as baleen whales, they have rows of plates with bristles called baleen in their mouths. The baleen capture the krill as the whale expels the water. They eat up to 8000 lbs of krill a day!

Made out of sustainably harvested balsa wood, these lightweight ornaments are hand-carved and then painted with non-toxic acrylic paint by a cooperative of skilled artisans on Isla Solentiname, Nicaragua. Approximate size: 5" x 2".
