Blue Morpho Butterfly Balsa Ornament

The blue morpho is not actually blue. The scales on the back of their wings overlap and refract the light giving them the vivid, iridescent coloring. The underside wing is brown with eyespots to provide protection from predators. They are one of the largest butterflies with wings spanning 5 to 8 inches. You are not likely to see one in its natural habitat unless traveling to South America.

Made out of sustainably harvested balsa wood, these lightweight ornaments are hand-carved and then painted with non-toxic acrylic paint by a cooperative of skilled artisans on Isla Solentiname, Nicaragua. Approximate size: 5" x 2".
