North America's sole breeding hummingbird is the ruby throated hummingbird. This precision flying gem beats its wings 53 times a second which gives off a humming sound, hence the name. They weigh no more than a nickel and have to eat half their body weight a day in sugar. That means eating 5 to 8 times an hour. They are always on the lookout for nectar from flowering plants or from a much appreicated hummingbird feeder.
Made out of sustainably harvested balsa wood, these lightweight ornaments are hand-carved and then painted with non-toxic acrylic paint by a cooperative of skilled artisans on Isla Solentiname, Nicaragua. Approximate size: 5" x 2".
